Customize Filters for a Specific Family Member's Device Using Secure DNS (DNS over HTTPS) in Browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, Brave, etc.)

NOTE:  This feature requires a Paid account.

Here are some scenarios where you may want to set up a separate FreeFiltering "sub-profile" to customize filters for a specific browser:

  1. A parent does not want the filters on their personal computer (i.e. a computer they use exclusively) to be as restrictive as the settings being broadcast for the "Main Profile" through the Wi-Fi router.  (If you were successful in changing the DNS on your Wi-Fi router to use our "Standard DNS Servers", any device connected to your Wi-Fi will receive the filter settings from the "Main Profile" automatically - unless we instruct a specific device/browser to use filter settings from a different FreeFiltering "sub-profile".)
  2. You want the browsers on your child's laptop to be filtered when away from home Wi-Fi (e.g. when connected to Wi-Fi networks at school or when travelling).
  3. You want the ability to analyze browsing history & analytics for browsers on a specific device (e.g. a computer your eldest child uses exclusively)
  4. You were unable to set up your Wi-Fi router to use our "Standard DNS Servers", so you want to set up filtering at the browser level instead.

In these cases, you might want to apply the filter settings from a specific FreeFiltering "sub-profile" to a specific browser.  Here's how:

1)  On your "Settings" page, under "Additional User/Device Profiles", click "create new sub-profile" to create a new sub-profile for the specific person/device where you want the filters applied:

2)  Click the pencil icon to give the new sub-profile a descriptive name for who/what will be filtered (e.g. Childs Name - Laptop):

3)  Next, you'll need to set up "Secure DNS" in any browser this family member uses exclusively (in the "Child Name - Laptop" example, you'd want to set up "DNS over HTTPS" for all browsers on the child's laptop).

Instructions for Setting Up "Secure DNS" in the most common browsers:

  1. Google Chrome
  2. Safari
  3. Mozilla Firefox
  4. Microsoft Edge
  5. Opera
  6. Brave
